Speech Intelligibility

WHAT IS SPEECH INTELLIGIBILITY?

Speech intelligibility can be defined as how clearly a person speaks so their speech is
understood by listeners. The intelligibility of speech is measured through a percentage. If you can only understand half of what a child is saying then their speech intelligibility rating would be 50%. Speech Intelligibility changes with a child’s age.

The visual above represents the different intelligibility levels with age. A child aged 1 years old should be 25% intelligible to unfamiliar communication partners. A child aged 2 years old should be 50% intelligible, 3 years old should be 75% intelligible and a 4-year-old child should be 100% intelligible.
